Whitler's Betty returned to the scence of her scary tumble last week, and ran a strong 2nd place in a Grade A sprint at Wheelng yesterday. Showing her true qualities as a racer, she appeared to have suffered no ill effects from her fall, and pressed the pace all the way. A promising effort. What a girl!
Meanwhile, Penny Zwart, who is the adoption coordinator at Shoreline Star, and whose group, Pups Without Partners, for whom Betty races, put on quite an adoption spectacular at the beautiful CT facility.
Unbenknowst to me, Penny arranged for the 4th, 5th and 6th races to be named in honor of your humble servants from "Raceforadoption", and presented a trophy emblematic of the "Dennis McKeon Derby", the "Martin Roper Run" and the "Larry Birnbaum Lap"....Bob Fine (nnracers)was on hand to stand in for Martin, and I went up to accept for Larry....and their trophys are in the mail, as Penny arranged to have them sent, along with the day's racing program.
There to help spread the word with very informative presentations, were, from "Make Peace With Animals", reknown authoress and greyhound pet authority Cynthia Branigan.... Joan Belle Isle from "Celebrating Greyhounds" magazine (and of Dewey fame)..... Fred Fulchino of the NGA (and the owner of the great contemporary racer, EAs Itzaboy)....as well as Bob Fine and yours truly.
Raceforadoption was lauded by the track announcer, who did an very nice job of explaining just what we had accomplished, and Raceforadoption seemed to be the "talk of the track" as we mingled among the many guests, and met with old friends who also turned out for the gala.
Shoreline is an extremely nice facility, and every seat in the house is "trackside", with excellent sightlines-----and the grandstand seating area had theatre-style seats. Very impressive.
It was a pleasure to meet and thank some of the folks who supported Raceforadoption from the git-go.
All in all, it was a great day for the greyhounds, for adoption, and for everyone who turned out to take part in the festivities-----and especially for Raceforadoption......far beyond anything I might have imagined.
Many thanks to Penny and the management at Shoreline Star for their kindness, thoughtfulness and for their profound committment to the racing greyhounds we all know and love.
And of course, a special thanks to you, the readers and supporters of Raceforadoption----without whom, none of this would have happened.
