Another Amazing Development

Due to the complications that the quarantine created, most of you are aware that Larry Birnbaum, our Racforadoption co-founder and the owner of C&C Kennels, generously offered us Whistler's Stud's older sister, Whistler's Betty, as a "stand-in" for the pup who was originally designated and donated to race for adoption.

Whistler's Betty is a highly accomplished racing greyhound, who has performed flawlessly thus far, in her duties as the "Raceforadoption" standard bearer. She has already, in just 4 races, earned over $5,000 for our 2 recipient groups, SEGA and Pups Without Partners.

It recently came to light that Whistler's Stud had been experiencing some not unusual developmental problems, as he began the track-training facet of his career in Abilene, KS.

This is often the way of saplings, and is part and parcel of the vagaries and uncertainties of developing racing greyhounds who are to become excellent track performers. Not all of them do. The odds against developing a pup from among a crop, who will become a reliable performer at a high level venue like Wheeling are astronomical. The task of doing so is daunting, for even the most accomplished breeders and handlers.

When Raceforadoption was conceived, we had to pretty much improvise its development as we went along, because we had no model to base our project upon. We learned to "roll with the flow", and however the wind blew, to keep our "eyes upon the prize"....which is to raise money, quickly and efficiently, for our adoption groups, so that they, in turn, can rehome more retired greyhounds.

We did not ever expect to find as dynamic and sympathetic a partner in this venture as our own Larry Birnbaum....who has gone well above and beyond anything we might have expected of any one person....not only promising us a pup who would qualify at Wheeling or Southland, but by matching $10,000 we raised with the sale of consortium shares.

When it became inevitable that the advent of Whistler's Stud's racing career was to be delayed for a prolonged and inestimable period, because of the quarantine, Larry offered us an accomplished and proven high-echelon competitor, Whistler's Betty, to take his place..... so that we could begin to raise adoption monies right away.....-which is now a "fait-accompli", thanks to Betty's sparkling performances to date.

Due to the training setbacks that Whistler's Stud has experienced, it is unknown at this time, how long it will take for him to actually begin his racing career. There is also some question now, as to whether or not it would be in Stud's best interest to begin his career at the highest-paying and perhaps the most competitive track in the US, at Wheeling. There is growing sentiment among his connections, that Stud is probably better off learning his track craft at a track like Southland....where the competition is not nearly as intense as at Wheeling....and where the money paid in purses is significantly less.

So, to prevent any loss of income for our adoption groups, or momentum in our race for adoption project, Larry has once again surprised us with his magnanimity. He has offered us Whistler's Betty as the permanent replacement for her brother.

Whistler's Betty is an extremely valuable racing greyhound, who has already performed a small miracle for our Raceforadoption endeavor. There is a huge difference between being given a puppy----an unknown quantity----and an experienced, high-echelon competitor with proven ability and tremendous earning potential, at the top venue in the country, to "raceforadoption" We could never have even dreamed of acquiring a greyhound like Betty at the outset.

Hopefully, others will begin to emulate the startling and unprecedented generosity and spirit of breed custodianship, exemplified by Larry Birnbaum and the C&C Kennel.

Naturally, Martin and I have accepted Larry's latest donation with our heartfelt thanks....once again, improvising as need dictates, the original "Raceforadoption" model and concept.

Please join us in thanking Larry and the C&C Kennel, and wishing the best of luck to our "new" and permanent Raceforadoption torch-carrier, the mercurial and beautiful Whistler's Betty----the first greyhound ever to "race for adoption".

I hope you are all as thrilled by this latest and most unexpected development as we are.

Larry, you manage to continually amaze me! I am struck speechless. Betty is a priceless grey, one in a million. She is what every owner, breeder, and trainer dreams of. Thank you for giving that dream to the consortium so that her brothers and sisters will retire into loving homes.

Behind every great man is a greyt women! Right Betty?

Thank you Larry.

While I know that Larry appreciates the expressions of thanks....I also know that he is most impressed with our consortium membership, and the commitment on the part of our fabulous, broader online community, both in and out of racing,to the concept and success of Raceforadoption.

When speaking with Larry, I am always amazed at his foresight, and by the fact that he is always wondering what we might do next, and how we might do it.....so though I'm blown away by this latest turn of events, in hindsight, I shouldn't have been too surprised. Martin, our core group of volunteers, and Larry, know how to get things done.

But without the tremendous commitment of our web readership to Raceforadoption-----it would never have happened as it has.

I think I can speak for all the movers and shakers of Raceforadoption, when I say "thanks" to you all for your support, participation, innovation and involvement. You are the best!
