Does anyone have information on what is going on with Whistler's Miss? She was scratched from her last race. The end of June she had to OOP comments on her race results. Hoping she just needs to R/R.

Candice,

Thanks for your interest in RFA and Miss.I will make a call tonight and try to get the answer.Hope it is just a little R & R. She sure is a champ and has been a consistant earner for the RFA groups.

It appears that Miss favors St. Pete over Tampa so she will be on R & R for the time being. As the St Pete season gets closer she will school there for her return.

She is doing well.Thank you for your interest.Miss has been a mainstay in the program this year.

Thanks for the update, so glad to hear it is nothing serious. I'm sure Miss will enjoy her R & R. She has been just a great racer and to see her fall back was a little odd. I guess everybody has their own preference.

Why does one track close and the other one's open in Florida? I'm used to the lower grade tracks since my three hounds came from the now closed Plainfield.

Why does one track close and the other one's open in Florida? I'm used to the lower grade tracks since my three hounds came from the now closed Plainfield.

In the beginning of greyhound racing it was more of a barnstorming sport (see The Road From Emeryville) where a dog owner would drive his half-dozen or so hounds from track to track. Some track operators discovered that adding racing dates actually cost them money. It was better to have a brief season of intense interest, like football or baseball, than to run long or even year-round meets where interest waned.

More recently, northern and southern tracks have made reciprocal arrangements where winter tourist traffic dictated racing dates in Florida and nice summer weather had the same kennels beating the southern heat in New England.

Tampa and St. Pete are far enough apart that the die-hard fan will drive to both to watch and bet on the dogs, while more casual locals will go to races only while their local venue is open. Many years ago that circuit was St. Pete and Southland in W. Memphis, Arkansas. Another circuit that does much the same thing is Jacksonville and Orange Park.

Heated surfaces have allowed many northern tracks to stay open year-round.

Good question!
